Broughton Ales

Founded in 1980. Broughton Ales is situated in the village of Broughton in the Scottish Borders.

Broughton Ales produce in 2007 11 different bottled beers, including three organic beers, 18 cask ales and their mixed gas keg beer, Broughton Best.

The owner also owns Whim Ales.

Black Douglas
"Black Douglas" or Sir James Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce, the famous Scottish King. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.

Border Gold Organic
Border Gold has won several awards. In 2005 bronze medal in the International Brewing Awards in Munich.

Organic malt from the UK and organically grown Pacific Gem hops from New Zealand hops are blended with pure water from the Scottish Border hills.

Champion Double Ale
A blend of a classic Scottish Strong Ale with a high quality Stout, each brewed in their own way, but married together in a conditioning tank to produce an interesting mix of flavour and aroma. Tesco Beer Challenge winner 2006. Champion Double ale has also been judged to be in "The World's 50 Best Beers"  in the Bottlers International Competion 2007. Gold medal winner in Scottish SIBA competition 2008.

Color 105-120. Bitternes 38 IBU.

Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt, Black Malt and pinhead oats. Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and First Gold.


Definitive
Whim Ales started brewing in December 1993 on the owner's farm. It is owned by the same person as Broughton Ales, but operates independently. Bottled at Broughton Ales.

Greenmantle
Named after John Buchan's novel "Greenmantle". First brewed in 1980. It was the first beer from the brewery.
Greenmantle. ABV 3,9%. 2008.

Color 40-45. Bitternes 25 IBU.

Optic Pale Ale Malt, Black Malt and Crystal Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and First Gold.


Old Jock Ale
The soldiers of the Highland and Lowland regiments of Scotland are known as "The Jocks". Recommended as an accompaniment to cheese and meat dishes.

Named after the legendary Merlin, whose burial site is close by Broughton Brewery.

Scottish Oatmeal Stout
Scottish Oatmeal Stout takes on the image of Robert Younger, founder of Younger's Brewery in Edinburgh and great grandfather of the founder of Broughton brewery.

The Ghillie
Originally the Clan Chiefs bearer, who stood behind him in battle, The Ghillie today is a much respected, pithy character who guides sportsmen of the world on the salmon and trout rivers of Scotland.

Color 28-33. Bitternes 45 IBU.

Optic Pale Ale Malt and Crystal Malt. Hops used are English grown Fuggles, First Gold and Challenger, with German Hallertau Brewers Gold as a late copper aroma hop.
